Murray MacDonald, WFU assistant director of assignments, replied to several UANA members’ questions about plans for amplified events this weekend, in particular the late-night event on 9/24. His reply on Wed., 9/21:

“Thank you for the emails regarding the events this weekend. I have contacted various offices about your questions and concerns. The events will continue to take place at Reynolda Meadows during their scheduled times. Since we are a private institution, a permit is not involved outside of the event being registered through our on-campus process. (Questions to the city can be directed to CityLink at 727-8000 or citylink@cityofws.org).

The student organizers for each upcoming event were contacted explaining the requirements for monitoring sound and the possible consequences for failing to do so. Amplified music is to be kept at a reasonable level in line with city ordinance. Complaints during the event should continue to directed to University Police at 336-758-5591.

Of course, any concerns after the events may be directed to me.”

Important UANA Meeting on May 10, 2011

Our next UANA general meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 6:30 pm at Forest Heights Senior Living Community, located at 2500 Polo Ridge Ct.   For directions, please contact Elizabeth Graves at 722.7118 or 782.0814.

We are pleased to have a special guest speaker at this meeting.  UANA member David Gall, a local architect and board member of Preserve Historic Forsyth, will be giving a special presentation regarding National Register Historic Designation for Oak Crest.  He will discuss the different types of historic designation and how historic designation would benefit Oak Crest.

This will also be a very important UANA meeting because it will be the final meeting under the current Executive Board.   It is imperative that we receive nominations for a new slate of officers.   The current board has been operating as a skeleton crew for quite some time and we are burned out.   We are giving notice now that we are resigning -- effective date is at this May 10 meeting.  It is now time for some "new blood" to fill these soon to be vacant seats.

The UANA along with our affiliation with the UACP has made great progress in the quality and standard of living in our neighborhoods over the past few years.   It is vitally important that we keep the momentum going and continue to strengthen our ties with WFU, WS Police, and the City of WS.  We still, and will continually have a purpose to improve the quality of life in our rapidly changing "transitional" community.

This is a critical time for all of us, especially with the economic downturn, that we pay close attention to the changes taking place surrounding where we live.  We live in nice neighborhoods that are, for the most part, attractive and safe.  It is probably agreed that we all have a vested interest in our homes and neighborhoods, that they continue to be well maintained and a safe place to live, as well as to increase our property values.

Without an Executive Board, UANA will cease to function as an active association and we could quite possibly see a lot of our progress be undermined.   Please do not allow this to happen.   We have a lot of wonderful people in our area with great talents and leadership skills that can be well utilized in serving the UANA as well as our community.   It takes some committment on your part, but we can all reap the the rewards.

Do not wait for or expect someone else to step up to the plate, but consider what you can contribute to the continued success of UANA.   Please plan to attend this important meeting and bring with you at least one nomination for our Executive Board.

Office seats to be filled are President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Community Liaison, and Communications Specialist (or whatever you want to call it).  We will also need about 5 or 7 people to serve as general board members.

We look forward to seeing you on May 10.

The University Area Neighborhood Association Care Team!
Neighbor 2 Neighbor

Beginning in December 2010, we began making “Neighbor 2 Neighbor” visits to our neighborhood senior citizens.  In an effort to know at least 1 neighbor— we are asking that you make us aware of anyone you feel may benefit from a social visit, has an occasional  transportation need, may have a safety & security   concern or just someone who needs a neighborly check to remind them that someone is thinking of them!

If you would like to be involved with the UANA Care Team or you would like to add someone you know, please call Elizabeth Graves at 336-782-0814 at Forest Heights Senior Living 336-722-7118.

Forest Heights Senior Living Joins UANA

At our last UANA meeting in November 2010, several staff members from Forest Heights Senior Living attended and joined UANA as our charter Business Member.  The addition of our newest member will help breathe new life in our association.

They have already formed an Elder Care Committee to assist and communicate with the senior residents in our neighborhoods.  Their first event as a committee was to host a Christmas Caroling visit to our senior neighbors on December 23.

Additionally, they will be contacting other area businesses to recruit them as members of UANA.

Later in the spring Forest Heights will be hosting some other social events to help bring us closer as a community.   So stay tuned for some exciting announcements!

Their assistance in these areas will help initiate the formation of our long desired Communications Committee, Social Events Committee, and Welcoming/Recruiting Committee.

Lastly, a big "thank you" to Elizabeth Graves and Mindi Alexandra of Forest Heights for their interest and participation in UANA.

WFU Student Residents Included in UANA Events

In order to strengthen bonds with our neighbors, UANA has been making efforts to make our WFU student neighbors feel more welcome in our neighborhoods.

Last fall, UANA residents and WFU students participated in an event called Rake Forest, in which some students volunteered their time to assist some of the residents who needed help with general yard work such as raking leaves and/or mowing lawns.

WFU student residents were also invited to our annual Oak Crest Picnic and Walking Tour Of Oak Crest.   We intend on including students in many more such events during 2011 and hope we can establish a positive relationship between permanent residents and our student neighbors.

The following information is former Home page announcements, starting with the mose recent at the top.   This information only dates back as far as January 2010.

WFU announces new policies that will impact students and area neighbors.

Beginning this school year, Wake Forest will be implementing some new policies that will bring more social events to campus, help curtail binge drinking, and require students to live on campus for their first three years.
For details please visit the follow link which includes an opening letter from President Nathan Hatch and then the new policies, followed by a Q & A section.  http://www.wfu.edu/vibrantcampus .

Oak Crest gets No Parking signs intalled on some side streets.

In an effort to reduce traffic congestion on the narrow side streets of Oak Crest, the majority of permanent residents petitioned the city to install No Parking signs on them.   Signs have already been installed on Harmon Av and Crepe Myrtle Cr.   Signs for Rosedale Cr are pending approval from the city.  If this effort proves successful, we will petition the city for No Parking signs to be installed on Friendship Cr and Idlewild Dr.

Annual Oak Crest events get moved to October.

Two newly established annual events that started out being held in the summer will now be moved to October in order to beat the heat and encourage more attendance.  Two years ago Oak Crest celebrated its 85 anniversary by hosting an old fashioned style picnic.   The picnic is a "bring your own everything" theme.  Since Oak Crest was founded in June 1923, the picnic was being held in June.   But the heat and the fact that a lot of folks are on vacation during that time, have yielded a low turnout.

Then in May of last year, Kent Strupe hosted the first annual walking tour of Oak Crest.  Again, the heat made an otherwise fun event a little unbareable.  So this year, both events will be hosted in October.   Hopefully the cooler weather and the beautiful Autumn colors will encourage friends and neighbors to attend these events and begin some traditions that can be carried out for years to come.

Also, Kent says he will condense his walking tour in order to be able to cover the entire neighborhood during the two hour event.  This event requires a lot of walking and covers a lot of history.  Two hours only begins to stratch the surface.  So, mark your calendars to attend these two events.   You will be glad you did.

 Announcements

Please continue to be alert and keep your homes and vehicles secured at all times,
and keeping all valuables out of sight.   Be sure to contact WSPD immediately if you
see any suspicious behavior in or around the neighborhood.

The University Police Department is investigating a burglary of a
student-occupied, university-owned house at 109 Rosedale Cir that was
reported to have occurred at approximately 11 p.m. March 15.

A female student told police that she awoke to find a man in her bedroom who
was going through her belongings.  The student reported that she grabbed the
man and shouted for help from others in the house, but the man immediately
fled her room and ran out of the house before anyone else in the house
responded. The student, who was not injured, called University Police.

Police suspect the man may have entered the student's room through an open
window.

University and Winston-Salem Police Department officers responded to the
report, but they did not locate the man.  An investigation is continuing.

Most of you probably received a post card several weeks ago announcing that the bulky item  pick up would be for the week of MARCH 15, 2010.   That date was in error.   The correct date is  for the week of JUNE 7, 2010.  The city decided to make it a later date in order to allow WFU students living in the neighborhood to put out their bulky items when they move out at the end of the school year.

You can also go to the following city website http://www.cwsonline.org/curbservice/ and type in any address to see when the bulky item pick up will be for that address.
